U.S. Olympic Team Defeats NBA Players

Danny Manning and Dan Majerle each scored 13 points Sunday to lead the U.S. Olympic basketball team to a 90-82 victory to start an eight-game tour against teams of players from the National Basketball Assn.

Manning, selected first in the NBA draft by the Clippers after leading Kansas to the national championship, and Majerle of Central Michigan were joined in double figures by Charles Smith of Pittsburgh and David Robinson, the 1987 college player of the year at Navy, with 12 each.

The Olympic team took a 24-11 lead with 12:20 left in the half when Majerle hit a three-pointer to cap an 11-0 run. The Olympic team led by as many as 16 points, 37-21, before settling for a 49-42 halftime lead.

The NBA team closed to within five points four times in the final five minutes, but a layup by Majerle and a dunk by Manning gave the Olympic team a 90-81 lead with 20 seconds to play.

Patrick Ewing led the NBA players with 16 points, and Chris Mullin had 13.
