Local News in Brief : Grant for Job Training

Share

City school officials Monday formally accepted a $1-million federal grant to be spent on a job training center aimed primarily at low-income residents in the Watts area.

The grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce, in addition to $5.8 million already approved by the Los Angeles Unified School District, will be used to renovate a burned out two-story building, district spokesman Trusse Norris said.

The new Watts Skills Center will be located along a main thoroughfare on school property, making it more accessible to students taking public transportation and less costly to operate than the center the district now leases.

A day-care center will be provided for parents enrolled in courses that will include banking, computer science, typing and drafting.
