Beryl Sweeps Over New Orleans
Tropical Storm Beryl moved onshore across New Orleans today, prompting storm alerts for 16 coastal parishes and raising hopes that it will move farther inland and dissipate without causing serious damage.
As of midday, the National Weather Service said the center of the season’s second tropical storm in the eastern United States was 50 miles west of New Orleans. The storm’s highest sustained winds were near 40 m.p.h., mainly in squalls in coastal waters, the service said. “If it continues to move west or northwest, Beryl should gradually weaken,” a weather service spokesman said.
