Officials Monday were investigating a report that a wake left by racers rather than a floating railroad tie sent a speedboat crashing into spectators, and said a fence would be built along that stretch of the Allegheny River.

Twenty-four people were injured in the accident Sunday during the Three Rivers Regatta. Ten remained hospitalized, including a 7-year-old boy in critical condition.

The boat was racing at 100 m.p.h. when it went out of control, but its engine cut off and it slowed to 30 m.p.h. before hitting the shoreline, police said.
