Share

Los Angeles city and police officials joined residents in the Northridge area Tuesday in participating in a national crime prevention program, officials said.

City Councilman Hal Bernson, who represents the 12th District, and Capt. Mark Stevens of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Devonshire Division, walked streets asking residents to support the “Fifth Annual National Night Out” program by turning their porch lights on between 8 and 10 p.m., Sgt. Paul Haberman said.

Also on Tuesday, the Glendale Police Department joined Citizens for Law and Order, a Business-Watch group, in sponsoring a wiener roast to build support for the program, Sgt. Dean Durand said.

The program was started in 1983 by the Town Watch Assn., headquartered in Wynnewood, Pa. People in communities across the country supported the program by holding barbecues, candlelight walks and by turning their porch lights on for several hours to demonstrate cooperation between Neighborhood Watch groups and local law enforcement agencies, officials said.

There are nearly 190,000 Neighborhood Watch members in Los Angeles County, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
