The Times-Advocate Co. on Wednesday said that it has agreed to acquire The Enterprise, a weekly newspaper in northern San Diego County, and The Californian, a weekly that circulates in southern Riverside County, from Marmack Publishing Co. for an undisclosed price.

The Enterprise has a paid circulation of about 9,000 in the area surrounding Fallbrook and Bonsall. The Californian has a paid circulation of more than 5,000 in the area surrounding Rancho California and Temecula.

Marmack Publishing Co., whose principal stockholder is Fallbrook resident Marian Mackey, has owned the 78-year-old Enterprise since 1955. Marmack began publishing The Californian in 1978.

G.L. Taylor will remain as publisher of the weeklies, Times-Advocate Co. President John M. Armstrong said in a prepared statement. Times-Advocate executives declined to make further comment.

Times-Advocate Co. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Tribune Co., which owns the Chicago Tribune. The Times-Advocate has 44,000 subscribers in northern San Diego County. Times-Advocate Co. also publishes the weekly North County Consumer News and Times-Advocate Quarterly magazine.
