Local News in Brief : Despite Outcry, District Reassigns Principal
Despite protests from parents, teachers and students, Gerald Horowitz, principal of Frost Junior High School in Granada Hills, will be transferred to Byrd Junior High School in Sun Valley next semester, a Los Angeles Unified School District administrator said.
Meanwhile, community leaders said they have not given up their effort to retain Horowitz at Frost. They said they will meet today with Julie Korenstein, the area’s Board of Education representative, to discuss the matter.
Replacing Horowitz at Frost will be Jay Peterman, principal of Columbus Junior High School in Canoga Park, said Ruben Zacarias, the district’s associate superintendent for operations.
He said Horowitz has “outstanding skills that will serve Byrd very well.”
The popular principal was reassigned “just to meet the needs of the school district,” Zacarias said.
Zacarias said he sympathizes with community members, about 30 of whom appeared at Monday’s Board of Education meeting to ask that Horowitz not be transferred.
“If it’s not broken, why fix it?” asked Sandy Zien, co-president of the PTSA at Frost. She said she is “very encouraged” that Korenstein is willing to meet with PTSA leaders.
