CAMPAIGN ’88 : Bush Appoints Laxalt as Campaign Co-Chair
Vice President George Bush announced Wednesday that former Nevada Sen. Paul Laxalt will share top campaign duties with former Treasury Secretary James A. Baker III, who left the Administration last week to steer Bush’s White House bid.
Bush said in Washington that he brought Laxalt on board as campaign co-chairman to help in the West--generally a Republican region--and to coordinate activities of President Reagan, a close friend, after the traditional Labor Day kickoff to the fall general election race.
“When I look at the goal ahead, the West is very, very important,” said the vice president, now just a week away from securing the presidential nomination at the Republican National Convention in New Orleans.
Laxalt’s selection should appease some conservatives who fear that Bush, after nearly eight years as Reagan’s vice president, may be too moderate.
