Italian authorities Wednesday expelled to West Germany an elderly German citizen accused of war crimes at a concentration camp in Czechoslovakia during World War II.

Police put Anton Malloth, 76, on a flight to Munich, where he was expected to be taken to a state prosecutor’s office in Dortmund that investigated the case in the past.

West Germany had not requested Malloth’s extradition, but Italian authorities expelled him on grounds that he was an “undesirable alien.”

On Tuesday, Czechoslovak authorities requested his extradition to Czechoslovakia, where Malloth was sentenced to death in his absence in 1948 on charges of murdering one inmate and abusing others while serving in the German army at the Nazi concentration camp at Theresienstadt, now Terezin, 300 miles from Prague.

But Italian officials said it was not possible to meet the request because Italy has no extradition treaty with Czechoslovakia.
