Record numbers of tourists crowding into Muir Woods may be admitted to the 553-acre redwood preserve by reservation only within two years, park officials said Wednesday.

Park manager Glenn Fuller said National Park Service authorities have decided to pursue a limited-access plan that would also include charging a fee to enter the Marin County park and a shuttle bus system to ferry visitors from a point several miles away.

Last year, 1.6 million tourists visited the woods.
