Local News in Brief : Home-Size Study Approved

Share

The Rolling Hills City Council has authorized spending up to $7,500 to examine the city’s need for an urgency ordinance that would limit the size of homes that can be constructed in the community.

The council last month sought to adopt a 45-day moratorium on the construction of homes larger than 6,500 square feet while the large-home issue was studied by the commission. But residents opposed the urgency ordinance, saying that setting the limit that low would reduce property values. Residents argued that prospective buyers seeking large homes would look elsewhere for buildable land and would not consider smaller homes if there were limits on how much the homes could be expanded.

The council then sent the ordinance back to the commission for review and public hearings.

The firm on Monday hired Keith Cos. of Costa Mesa, which will inventory existing and new residences, review city objectives as outlined in the General Plan and survey cost and sales trends for existing and new houses. A report on its findings will be submitted during a Planning Commission hearing Aug. 16.
