Vice President George Bush may have pulled ahead of Democratic rival Michael S. Dukakis in the race to win the White House, a poll conducted by ABC News showed Friday.

The survey found that 49% of Americans polled favored Bush, compared to 46% for Dukakis.

ABC said the opinion sampling, taken two days earlier, was a small one--708 people, of which only 384 said they were likely to vote in the Nov. 8 presidential election. The margin of error was high, plus or minus 6%, it said.

The findings flung an element of confusion into the campaign standings as Republicans gathered for their national convention in New Orleans, where Bush is to be nominated as the GOP’s candidate for the presidency.

All other major polls in recent days have shown Dukakis in the lead, with Bush making up some of the ground lost during the Democrats’ successful convention in Atlanta last month.

Thursday Poll Results

Poll results released Thursday showed Bush trailing by 6 to 14 percentage points.

An NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll gave Dukakis 50% to 36% for Bush. A USA Today/CNN poll had Dukakis leading 52% to 40%, and a Business Week/Harris sampling showed a 51%-45% split in which Dukakis held the edge.

On Tuesday, a Gallup Poll showed Dukakis in front, 49% to 42%.
