An influential Italian newspaper Sunday attacked a fashion stylist for giving Pope John Paul II “designer” liturgical vestments to wear at a Mass closing a special year of devotion to the Virgin Mary.

Top Italian women’s designer Laura Biagiotti gave the Pope a chasuble (outer vestment), stole and miter specially designed for the closing of the International Marian Year at the Vatican today.

“The Search for Notoriety in the Fashion World Knows No Bounds. A (stylist’s) Signature Even for the Pope,” Milan’s Corriere della Sera headlined a front-page editorial.

A Vatican spokesman said it was not yet certain what the Pope would wear for the ceremony.
