About 100 trees have been “spiked” in the Tahoe National Forest in an apparent protest of a planned sale of 202 acres of timberland, U.S. Forest Service officials said. The spikes, found about five miles south of Truckee, are the first discovered in the Lake Tahoe area and officials blame the incident on environmental extremists. “It’s safe to assume it’s sick people who don’t want the trees to be sold,” said Karen Jones, district timber management officer. Jones said 10-inch-long railroad spikes were wedged into the trees from 2 to 7 feet above the ground. Spikes lower the value of timber and threaten the safety of loggers, she said.
