Teen-Ager Is Sentenced in Another’s Murder

A 19-year-old man was sentenced Monday to 17 years to life for killing another teen-ager. The judge recommended that Manuel Carter Cass Jr. of San Diego serve part of his sentence with the California Youth Authority.

Cass was convicted of the March 23 slaying of Anthony White, 17, as White waited at a bus stop at 7 a.m. in Southeast San Diego.

Cass pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

San Diego Superior Court Judge Charles Hayes made the CYA recommendation, which is not binding on the agency. The CYA can reject Cass and send him to prison if it finds he is unfit to live with other youthful offenders.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Dave Stutz said the CYA can hold Cass only until he is 25 and he will have to serve the rest of his sentence in state prison.

The shooting appeared to be in retaliation for another homicide committed a week earlier in Southeast San Diego, Stutz said.
