A Malaysian economics student has been charged with possession of $2 million in counterfeit American bills in the largest seizure of bogus money in Ireland’s history.

Geoffrey Tong-Yow, 27, of London, was arrested Monday in Dublin after police nabbed him with $2 million in $50 notes packed in boxes.

Two Irishmen, not immediately identified, will also be charged in the case, police said.

Justice Desmond Windle ordered Tong-Yow held on $255,000 bail until Aug. 22. The Malaysian’s lawyer said he would seek a reduction in bail.

Police said Tong-Yow has lived in London since 1980. He arrived in Ireland on Saturday.

Detectives said they did not know if the money was printed in Ireland or brought in from outside. They said it was the largest amount of bogus bills ever confiscated in Ireland.
