President Pieter W. Botha voiced grave concern over the health of Nelson Mandela today. But, rejecting a request from Mandela’s family to allow doctors of their choice to examine Mandela, Botha said he was satisfied the jailed black nationalist leader was receiving the very best medical care.

A statement from Cape Town’s Tygerberg Hospital, where the 70-year-old Mandela is being treated for fluid on the lung, said he was “up and about” and responding well. A hospital spokesman for the second day declined to confirm a statement by Mandela’s lawyer that the patient is suffering from tuberculosis.
