North Korea agreed to meet South Korea Friday in Panmunjom, a truce village in the demilitarized zone, to prepare a joint session of their national assemblies to discuss the North’s possible participation in next month’s Summer Olympics and a non-aggression pact.
The meeting would mark the first time in three years that the countries have met face to face.
The official North Korean Central News Agency said in a dispatch monitored in Tokyo that the head of North Korea’s parliament, Yang Hyong Sop, sent a telephone message to Kim Jae Sun, chairman of South Korea’s parliament, agreeing to Friday’s meeting.
North Korea Tuesday rejected the International Olympic Committee’s invitation to march side-by-side with the South at the Seoul Games’ opening and closing ceremonies with their respective flags.
