North’s Trial

Share

By postponing Oliver North’s conspiracy trial until after the fall presidential election campaign, Judge Gerhard A. Gesell hasn’t really been persuaded to do the Republican Party any good (Part I, Aug. 6). If the trial were to be held now, too many incriminating facts about White House personnel would come to light (as it will eventually, anyway), but this obvious postponement clearly indicated, even to die-hard Republicans, that too much evidence about the Iran-Contra affair has been, and is still being, swept under the rug. There will come a day, but meanwhile Vice President George Bush’s chances for election have been considerably lessened, as they should be.
