Local News in Brief : Laguna Beach : Council Agrees to Safety Plan for Canyon Road

Share

The City Council Tuesday night approved a compromise proposal with the Orange County Transportation Commission to increase traffic safety on Laguna Canyon Road.

Under the proposal, previously approved by the Transportation Commission, two extra police officers would be hired to patrol the road and several improvements would be made to make it less dangerous.

The improvements would include installation of a traffic signal, new signs that are easier to see and read, work on the road’s drainage system and steeper banking at the Big Bend curve, where there have been numerous fatal accidents in recent years.

The accident-prevention strategy is to begin in January. Cost of the improvements is estimated at $250,000 and most of that will be paid by the California Department of Transportation. The city will pay the $30,000 cost of the traffic signal and in two years will pick up the $100,000 annual cost of the increased police patrol.
