Local News in Brief : Whites and Latinos Added to Panel
Inglewood school board members have named two Latinos and two white members to a previously all-black advisory group aiding the search for a new superintendent, saying the original omissions were unintentional.
The district’s enrollment of 15,000 is about 56% black and almost 40% Latino, with small percentages of Asians, Pacific Islanders and whites.
The advisory committee was formed in late June to help select a new superintendent. Each of the four board members, all of whom are black, named five committee members. Board members said they realized the lack of diversity at a meeting Aug. 8, when a consultant presented the list of the 20 committee appointees, most of them school employees or politically prominent city residents.
“I think it was an oversight on all of our parts,” board member Larry Aubry said. “I’m as culpable as anybody else. It was preposterous. It was a goof as far as I’m concerned.”
The committee held several meetings in July and will meet again this month to review applications from job candidates.
