The nation’s heartland suffered through blistering heat while the Northeast was treated to slightly cooler temperatures. New York City reported a relatively cool 84 degrees and Philadelphia registered 90, but records were broken or tied in more than 30 cities and in 14 states, most in the Midwest. The temperature in Des Moines hit 104 degrees, breaking a 1983 record of 103. Other cities surpassing the century mark included Baltimore; La Crosse, Wis.; Louisville, Ky.; Madison, Wis.; Moline, Ill.; Nashville, Tenn.; Paducah, Ky.; Peoria, Ill., and Washington.
