A Mather Air Force Base colonel who faced court-martial on adultery charges was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, a base spokesman said. The body of Col. Larry Hightower, 48, was found in a bathroom in the Sacramento-area base’s hospital by a janitor, Capt. Ron Lovas said. Hightower was accused of having adulterous romances with three female officers and an enlisted woman, and with making false statements under oath. The women were active-duty personnel who worked for Hightower while he was the chief Air Force recruiter for 16 western states. Hightower was relieved of his command and temporarily assigned to the commander of the 323rd Flying Training Wing while awaiting disposition of his case.
