Strikes Begun by Coal Miners Spread in Poland
A rising tide of labor unrest crippled production at five vital coal mines today and paralyzed port operations and public transport in the city of Szczecin, opposition leaders said.
The workers are demanding the restoration of legal status for the banned Solidarity trade union federation, higher wages and improved working conditions.
The strikes, which began when miners occupied the July Manifesto mine near Jastrzebie in southwestern Poland on Tuesday, spread today to a fifth mine.
Transportation workers in Szczecin also stopped work today, joining dockworkers on strike in the city, which is the nation’s second largest port after Gdansk.
