Local News in Brief : Renaissance Faire Fans Protest Plan

Opponents of a planned housing development on the site of the Renaissance Pleasure Faire in Agoura on Thursday delivered 14,000 handwritten letters to the Board of Supervisors, urging the board to deny permits for the project.

After they found that Supervisor Mike Antonovich, who represents the area, was out of town and unable to accept the letters, supporters of the annual Elizabethan-style event--some dressed in Renaissance-style clothing--vowed to read them aloud on the steps of the county building in downtown Los Angeles into the weekend.

The 320-acre tract of rolling hills and oak trees has been home to the fair for 24 years, but early this year the owner of the property told officials of the event that he will develop the land.

In April, the county Planning Commission voted to recommend that zoning for the land be changed to accommodate the development of about 160 single-family homes, a decision that must be reviewed by the Board of Supervisors.

“If this permit is approved, every other developer will want one, and our canyons will be destroyed,” said Susan Nelson, president of Friends of the Santa Monica Mountains, a conservation group.
