BALTIMORE — Forty-seven pieces of small-scale Asian artwork, worth about $500,000, have been stolen from the Walters Art Gallery, authorities announced Thursday.
The theft occurred between July 22 and Aug. 13 when the museum’s curator of Asian art, Hiram Woodward, was on vacation, gallery director Robert Bergman said. Woodward discovered that the items were missing when he returned.
The objects taken were primarily porcelain pieces, Bergman said. Also taken were a group of antique Chinese snuff bottles and a Peach Bloom vase, purchased by gallery founder William Walters in 1886.
