GOP NATIONAL CONVENTION : New Orleans as Joint Convention Site in ’92 Urged
New Orleans wants the Republicans to come back in four years and bring the Democrats with them, a convention organizer said Thursday.
“We’re talking about having both conventions here in 1992,” said millionaire oilman Patrick Taylor, who helped raise money to bring the GOP to New Orleans this week. “This is the convention city of the future.”
In Atlanta last month, Sen. John B. Breaux (D-La.) invited his fellow Democrats to hold their next quadrennial gathering in the Crescent City.
Both parties considered New Orleans and the Louisiana Superdome, the world’s largest multipurpose stadium, for their 1988 conventions. But the GOP signed up first and required so much preconvention setup time that the Democrats chose Atlanta.
Taylor’s plan for 1992 would have the parties separate their conventions by five weeks instead of three.
‘Would Save Money’
“It would save money for the parties, for the media,” he said.
By most accounts, the GOP convention, which concludes Thursday, has been a success here on the Mississippi River, but that does not guarantee New Orleans host rights four years from now.
