Tokyo Asks Moscow to Curb Artillery Exercise

TOKYO —
The government asked the Soviet Union to scale down a planned artillery exercise in the Sea of Japan beginning today, Foreign Ministry officials said Thursday. Japan fears the exercise could hurt fishermen operating near the exercise area.
The request was presented to the Soviet government by the Japanese Embassy in Moscow on Wednesday.
