U.S. Meets France for Britannia Cup

The top-seeded United States team will meet unseeded France today for the championship of the 10th annual Britannia Cup seniors tennis tournament at Lindborg Racquet Club in Huntington Beach.

The United States has won the Britannia championship, a Davis Cup-style event for players 65 and over, every year since its inception in 1979.

Play begins today at 9 a.m.

The United States defeated Austria, 2-1, Thursday, and France, which upset second-seeded Norway in the second round, defeated third-seeded Great Britain, 2-1.

Action continues today in the Austria Cup (55 and over) and the Dubler Cup (45 and over).

In the Austria Cup quarterfinals Thursday, top-seeded Canada defeated Sweden, 3-0, New Zealand upset second-seeded Australia, 2-1, the U.S. defeated Argentina, 3-0, and West Germany defeated Austria, 2-1.

Canada plays the U.S. and West Germany plays New Zealand on today’s semifinals.

In third round of the Dubler Cup, top-seeded Italy defeated Great Britain, 2-1; Sweden defeated Spain, 2-1; the U.S. defeated Mexico, 3-0; Switzerland defeated Norway, 3-0; France defeated Israel, 3-0; West Germany defeated Finland, 2-1; Australia defeated Canada, 2-1; and Australia defeated Argentina, 3-0.

In the quarterfinals today, Italy plays Sweden, the United States plays Switzerland, France plays West Germany and Australia plays. Austria.
