GOP Comes in 2nd in TV Ratings

Vice President George Bush’s speech Thursday night, the last night of the Republican National Convention, was the most-watched part of the GOP meeting, but Democratic candidate Michael S. Dukakis had more viewers, according to figures released Friday.

In addition, the Democrats had more viewers overall for their four-day convention than the Republicans had over four days.

On Thursday night, about 18,538,300 households were watching the Republicans, the A. C. Nielsen Co. reported. The final night of the Democratic convention was viewed by 18,715,700 households.

Over the four days of the convention, the Republicans averaged 16,586,900 viewers, compared to the Democrats 18,449,600 average for their four-day meeting. The Republicans beat the Democrats only on opening night, when they paid tribute to Ronald Reagan.
