Man Faces 18 Charges of False Ads

A Yorba Linda man faces 18 misdemeanor charges of making false and misleading statements in advertising by implying that he was selling furniture at a loss because he was moving to Australia or being transferred overseas, La Palma police said.

Instead, the man bought the furniture wholesale, inflated the prices and apparently was going nowhere but to the bank, according to police.

Fraud investigators arrested Boris John Sutlovic, 32, at his home last week, according to a statement by Sgt. Michael Sellers.

Sutlovic’s ads had appeared in Los Angeles and Orange County editions of the Pennysaver and other shopper publications and had run intermittently for the past 2 1/2 years, Sellers said.

In the ads, Sutlovic usually stated he was “moving back to Australia” or had received an “overseas executive transfer,” leading the reader to believe he was motivated to sell at a loss because of a pending move, police said.

Actually, according to police, he bought the furniture wholesale, increased the prices and sold it at a profit.

Sutlovic faces a possible jail term of one year or a $2,500 fine on each count, police said.
