USC assistant athletic director Craig Fertig has accepted the position of associate athletic director at UC Irvine.

Fertig has had a long association with USC as a quarterback in the 1960s, assistant football coach under John McKay and an athletic department administrator, a job he has held since 1983. He was also the head football coach at Oregon State from 1976 through 1979.

Fertig will be in charge of fund raising at UC Irvine, replacing Mike Carroll, who is now associated with Virginia Tech.

“It was a career move,” Fertig said, “but it wasn’t an easy decision. It’s a very emotional thing to be leaving USC, which has been part home since I was 17 years old.”
