Local News in Brief : New Classes for Amnesty Applicants
New classes will be offered by the Los Angeles Unified School District for immigrants applying for U.S. amnesty beginning Sept. 13.
The district is prepared to enroll up to 500,000 adults in U.S. history, government and civics classes required of immigrants applying for permanent residency under the federal immigration reform law, Assistant Supt. James Figueroa said.
About 60,000 students have completed the amnesty education program offered by the district since May. One thousand students took the classes during the district’s unique all-night program that ran from 9:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. at Evans Adult School near Chinatown.
Amnesty applicants have 18 months after filing their applications to meet the law’s education requirements.
