Pope John Paul II, in a letter to Hungarian Catholics to mark the 950th anniversary of the death of St. Stephen, said there are signs of a moral and spiritual renewal in the Communist-ruled nation.

Celebrations marking the anniversary of “King St. Istvan (Stephen),” the founder of the Hungarian state, culminated on Saturday with the announcement that the Pope had been invited to visit the East Bloc country. No date has been set for the papal visit.
