U.S. naval forces in the Persian Gulf have relaxed their military posture somewhat to reflect a lowering of tension since a cease-fire took effect in the Iran-Iraq War on Saturday, the White House said. Spokesman Marlin Fitzwater told reporters that fewer aircraft patrols are being made and that some of the U.S. warships will make more port calls. Fitzwater added, however, that no decision has been made to remove warships from the area, and there have been no changes in the rules of engagement, the standing operational orders given U.S. military commanders.
