General Killed in Pakistan Is Buried
Brig. Gen. Herbert M. Wassom, the senior U.S. military attache to Pakistan killed in the air crash that also took the life of President Zia ul-Haq, was buried with full military honors Tuesday at Arlington National Cemetery.
Wassom’s grave, on a slope framed by two old oaks, is next to that of U.S. Ambassador Arnold L. Raphel, also killed in the crash last Wednesday. Raphel was buried Monday.
The general’s coffin was surrounded by members of his family and Army comrades, some wearing the red berets of the 101st Airborne Division, of which Wassom had been assistant division commander. The ceremony for the general, a native of Rockwood, Tenn., included a riderless horse.
