The Israeli navy announced that it is testing a missile capable of destroying enemy missiles, ships or planes at ranges up to 8 miles. Known as the Barak (Lightning), it will carry a 48-pound TNT warhead and be deployed in the early 1990s, Rear Adm. Avraham Ben-Shosan told reporters at his Haifa headquarters. Defense experts said the missile uses radar tracking technology and high-speed computers similar to those being developed in the “Star Wars” missile defense system. With U.S. aid, Israel is also developing a land-based missile to intercept medium-range missiles aimed at Israeli cities and strategic targets.
