Local News in Brief : Building Moratorium Extended

Share

The Palos Verdes Estates City Council Tuesday extended for 10 months and 15 days a moratorium on construction in areas zoned for multiple-dwelling units.

The moratorium, which was to expire Friday, was enacted July 12 because council members said they were concerned that multiple-dwelling units next to the city’s commercial zones are “due for recycling” and city codes regulating them are inadequate. The moratorium gives staff time to evaluate and update codes governing the construction of units such as condominiums and townhouses.

Owners who are seeking to sell some dilapidated apartment buildings spoke out against the moratorium, saying they will be unable to find buyers while the moratorium is in effect.

“I think it would be short-sighted of the council to lift this moratorium prematurely,” Mayor James Kinney said.
