Iran Takes Hard Line in Talks
The Iranian envoy took a hard line today at the second day of the Iran-Iraq peace talks, saying a lasting settlement to the prolonged dispute depends on observance of a 1975 border treaty repudiated by Iraq.
Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Velayati and Iraqi Foreign Minister Tarik Aziz held indirect talks for about two hours this morning with discussion mediated by U.N. Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar. They resumed face-to-face talks in the afternoon. Velayati delivered a strong statement after the morning session about the validity of the 1975 Algiers Treaty that gave Iran rights to the disputed Shatt al Arab waterway.
