The California Beverage Container Recycling and Litter Reduction Act, which went into effect Oct. 1, 1987, requires every major supermarket in the state to establish a certified recycling center within a half a mile radius. It also guarantees that consumers will receive a minimum one-cent redemption value for every labeled container they return to a certified recycling center.

According to an August report, consumers redeemed 67% of their aluminum, 48% of their glass and 4% of their plastic beverage containers from January through May this year. Under the law, each container must achieve a redemption rate of 65% by June 30, 1989, or redemption values will increase to 2 cents. (Before the law, redemption rates were 50% for aluminum, 40% for glass and 0% for plastic beverage containers.)

Since the law went into effect, more than 150 certified recycling centers have opened in Orange County. Most of these have either automated “reverse vending machines” or manned depots. The accompanying tables list some of the county’s major recycling centers; county markets that do not yet have recycling centers, and redemption and recycling rates for aluminum, glass, plastic and non-aluminum metals since the law went into effect.
