Home Toxic Waste Site Opens in Massachusetts

EDGARTOWN, Mass. —
The first permanent household hazardous waste collection center on the East Coast opened Friday in this Martha’s Vineyard community.
The center, funded by a $28,000 state grant, will serve all six towns on the island. State officials hope the pilot project will spawn similar regional centers elsewhere in the state.
Until now, the only way to dispose of household hazardous wastes such as paints, solvents and pesticides has been to wait for a once-a-year collection day.
