Several proteges of the late Pakistani President Zia ul-Haq, including at least six current government ministers, have split from the Pakistan Muslim League to form their own party for the election in November. The Muslim League, which governed from 1986 until last May when its leader, then-Prime Minister Mohammed Khan Junejo, was dismissed by Zia, is expected to offer the main challenge to opposition leader Benazir Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s Party in the upcoming vote. Political observers said the split should improve her party’s chances.
