American and Canadian law enforcement officials apparently thwarted plans by suspected Croatian terrorists to assassinate Soviet bloc athletes at the 1988 Winter Olympics, according to a report in the Cleveland Plain Dealer Sunday.
Canadian provincial police seized 37 firearms at the Canadian border at Windsor, Ontario, on Jan. 3.
The newspaper cited sources, which it did not identify, as saying the weapons were destined for a group known as the Yugoslavians Against Communism, in Vancouver, British Columbia, allegedly to be used to assassinate Communist athletes at the Olympics in Calgary, Alberta.
The weapons were reportedly purchased illegally in St. Petersburg, Fla. The newspaper did not say whether any arrests had been made.
