Offensive Line Still Questionable as Trojans Get Ready for Opener

Share

USC Coach Larry Smith has said that his offensive line is the most unsettled area of his team, and the situation isn’t getting any better.

Guards Brent Parkinson and Mark Sager, both of whom are injured, won’t be on the traveling squad today when USC leaves for Thursday night’s game against Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

Linebacker Junior Seau, who has an ankle injury, and cornerback Dwayne Garner, who has been suffering from back spasms, also will stay home.

Parkinson is a two-year starting guard, but he missed spring practice while recuperating from knee surgery and hasn’t fully recovered. Sager replaced him but is now inactive with a groin injury. So Dan Barnes, who didn’t have much playing time as a reserve in 1987, is now the starting left guard.

Tailback Steven Webster, who is also making a comeback from knee surgery, and defensive tackle Tim Ryan (ankle injury), will make the trip but aren’t expected to play much.
