San Diego police officers have overwhelmingly approved a two-year contract extension that calls for a 13.6% pay raise through mid-1991, the San Diego Police Officers Assn. announced Thursday.
Officials said that mail-in ballots received over the last week showed that 801 officers voted to accept the contract extension proposed by the city and 226 voted against it.
The contract extension, which begins next July 1 and ends June 30, 1991, provides for a 13.6% pay increase, with most of that amount coming during the first year.
The average city patrol officer now earns about $35,000 a year in base salary, according to the POA. Under the current contract, officers received a 5% pay increase July 1 and are to receive an additional 2% increase in January.
