Local News in Brief : Post Office Hours Will Increase Sept. 10

Share

The Postal Service will expand operating hours in the San Fernando Valley on Sept. 10, restoring many of the cuts made in February to save money, postal officials said.

In some cases, operating hours will exceed those in place before the cuts, as much as an hour and a half daily. Most large offices will open earlier and close later than they did before February, while smaller offices will return to schedules in place before the cuts, said John Conte, communications director for the Van Nuys division of the Postal Service. In addition, some offices, including the main office in Burbank, will be open Saturdays.

Hours will be posted at individual offices.

The Postal Service was forced to scale back window service after Congress cut $1.2 billion from its budget in an attempt to reduce the federal deficit.

Conte said the Postal Service was able to restore the lost hours because of savings generated by innovative management, including computerization of several postal operations and better training of new employees.
