Labor Day provided little to celebrate for Eastern Air Lines employees as the company quickly began the process of cutting back its work force in a plan that will eventually eliminate 4,000 jobs. The court stipulated that Eastern post a $4.7-million bond to cover a month’s payroll while it pleaded its case for the layoffs. Company spokeswoman Virginia Sanchez would not say how many workers will be furloughed in the first round of layoffs, which takes effect Sept. 10.
