San Marino : Fund-Raisers Merge

Share

San Marino’s Community Chest merged with United Way on Sept. 1, ending 50 years of volunteer fund-raising for San Marino agencies and institutions.

Betty Carriel, a member of the Community Chest board of directors for 30 years, said the merger resulted from changes in charitable giving in recent years. She said competition among charitable organizations is rising. It was decided that United Way is a more professional fund-raiser and will continue to support local needs, she said.

The Community Chest annually raised more than $100,000 that it distributed to 26 local agencies. Of these, 15 will not be covered by United Way, although financial support will be phased out over a five-year period.
