Compton : Parks Hours Extended With Hiring of 13 Aides
Parks and recreational facilities in Compton are now open seven days a week, and two hours have been added to the Monday-through-Thursday schedule, meaning gyms and other facilities are open until 8 p.m. four nights a week.
Residents who work all day can now play basketball, learn arts and crafts or take aerobic exercise classes because of the hours. There are also after-school programs so “latch-key” children can participate in sports, arts and crafts or field trips under adult supervision.
The extended hours are possible because 13 new recreational aides have been added to the Parks and Recreation Department staff. The City Council authorized the hirings in an effort to provide alternate activities for young people who might otherwise be attracted to gangs.
Hours for parks and recreation facilities are Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sundays, noon to 5 p.m.
