Local News in Brief : Anti-Growth Group Gears Up Campaign
Construction in Pasadena would be limited each year to 250 housing units and 250,000 square feet of commercial space under a slow-growth initiative sought by a citizens group, Pasadena Residents in Defense of our Environment (PRIDE).
The group plans to begin circulating petitions in the next two weeks to put the measure on the March ballot. It needs signatures from 6,300 registered voters by Oct. 28 to qualify the measure.
PRIDE’s initiative would require developers to pay the full cost of city sewer, street and utility improvements that benefit their projects and would place stringent restrictions on the demolition of low-cost housing.
The PRIDE initiative is the second slow-growth measure in Pasadena in the last year. Proposition G, which would have established a temporary building moratorium, was defeated in the June election by a 20,411-8,971 vote.
